On the 1881 Census Harold Spens BLACK, aged 22, civil engineer, born in Baldernock, lived at Stockbrigg House, Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, the house of William James Martin (b.1854 Paisley, Renfrewshire), a civil engineer, and William’s mother, Jane Martin (b. 1814 Glasgow). Harold Frank Spens Black (b. 1858) was 1st cousin once removed of James Black, who married Ann Maxwell Black (b. 1802); Ann Maxwell Black was 1st cousin once removed of William James Martin. It is interesting that James William Alston (b. 1796), his father William, William James Martin (b. 1853), his mother, and Harold Frank Spens Black (b. 1858) lived at various times at Stockbrigg House, Lesmahagow.
