James BLACK may have been born 26feb1763, Low Church, Paisley (Latter Day Saints submission). James may have resided at 17 Blythswood Square, Glasgow and Allander House, Milngavie, though this reference may pertain to a James Black of James Black and Co., calico printers, who had their works between Station Rd. and Allander Water. The parents of the brothers who set up this firm were apparently James Black (brother of Rev. John Black (1741-1836) who married Elizabeth Summers) and Catherine Lamb. However James (Spens) Black, the son of James, was a calico printer as the following entry shows. .From “Decennial indexes to the services of heirs in Scotland 1700-1859”: Reg. 12sep1850. James Spens Black, calico printer, Glasgow, to his father James Black, merchant there, heir gen. According to David Black in Australia, James Black lived at Blythswood Square, Glasgow. Glasgow PO Directory 1831 has following 2 entries: James Black, merchant of John Black and Co. house 17 Blythswood Sq. Black, John, and Co. calico printers, 109 Candleriggs (glasgowstory). The will is registered 10feb1849 at Scottish Archives of „James BLACK, merchant in Glasgow, father of James Spens BLACK, also father of youngest son Wilsone BLACK, only child of the marriage to Lillias WILSON“.
