There are several possible sources of information about James Black and Ann Maxwell. James BLACK of Paisley, Renfrewshire, may have married in about 1755 Anne MAXWELL (born 4aug1734, died 24jul1801, aged 69). Anne MAXWELL’s parents were James MAXWELL of Merksworth, Renfrewshire and Janet LECKIE (born 1688), daughter of John LECKIE of Croy Leckie, Dunbartonshire and Margaret MACGREGOR (sister of Rob Roy) (R. Steel). Alternatively James BLACK born 1737, Low Church, Paisley, Renfrewshire, may have married 1756 Ann (Annie) (Anne) MAXWELL (born 4aug1734 Paisley/1738 Paisley/1735). James had children James and John and a daughter who married Mr. Ferrier in Dublin, Ireland; the offspring of the Ferrier marriage belonged to the Stokes and Fitzgerald families according to family letters.

From Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of landed gentry: MALCOLM MACGREGOR, in Glengyle, who married a daughter. of Macdonald, of Keppoch, by whom he had (with several daughters, one of them was married to MacGregor of Caollotter, in Strathfillan) two sons, DONALD and John. Sarah, married to Macdonald, brother of Glencloe ; and ii. a daughter married to John Leckie, of Croy-Leckie, ??. Dumbarton, from whom descend the families of Maxwell, Graham, and Black of Clairmont.

According to R. Steel, James Black’s wife, Anna Maxwell (1735-1804), was daughter of James Maxwell and Janet Leckie. An Anne Maxwell was born 4aug1734 at Abbey, Paisley, Renfrewshire, daughter of James Maxwell and Janet Leckie.
