Wilsone BLACK (by the 2nd wife, Lillie/Lillias WILSONE/WILSON) born 10feb1837 in Barony (Latter Day Saints submission), died 1909 at Paddington, London, England (bdm index). Wilsone died 5jul1909 (Who was who) or 8jul1909 (Times). Wilsone Black married Florence Maude BOGGS.(born in Nova Scotia, Canada, about 1848, according to 1881 census). Wilson married Florence Maude Boggs, daughter of Stephen and Sarah Boggs 8jun1869 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada (R. Huggard, IGI). He probably served in the Crimea with the 42nd Regiment until 1856 (R. Huggard). In 1861 census he was registered as Captain in Scottish Army at 4 Albany Place, York Town, Frimley, Ash, Surrey, England (clanjackson). He became Lt. Col. Wilsone BLACK in 1879 in South Africa and was stationed at Infantry Camp, St. Botolph, Colchester, Essex at the time of the 1881 census with his family and 1 servant. As Major General he was governor of Hong Kong from 1891 to 1898 (website). From “The new annual army list for 1860”, pub. 1995: 6th (the Royal 1st Warwickshire) Regt. Of Foot. Capt. Wilson Black, ensign 1854, Lt. 1855. Capt. 1857. Wilsone served with the 42nd Highlanders in the Crimea from 14jul1855 including the siege and fall of Sebastopol (medal and clasp). From “The annual army list for 1885”: Wilsone Black, CB, Lt. Col. 24th Foot. Assist. Adjutant and Qtr. Master general, Nova Scotia, Major 1872, Lt. Col. 1878, col. 1882, placet on half pay 1882.

“Major Gen. Sir Wilsone Black, KCB, died at Burwood Pl., London, after an operation, aged 72…Entering the army at the age of 17, he served with the 42nd Highlanders in the Crimea from June 1855….Promoted major in 1872, he again saw service in the Kaffir War of 1878….In the following year he took part in the Zulu war, and had the distinction of commanding the party that recovered the lost colours of the 24th Foot…Becoming a Lt. Col. in 1878, he was 4 years afterwards, appointed AA and QMG in Nova Scotia, which post he held for 5 years. Subsequently he was AAG in Gibralter and commanded the troops in Jamaica. Promoted General in 1893, he commanded for 5 years, first the Belfast district and then the troops in China and Hong Kong” (Times). Present at his funeral were: his widow, Lady Black, his nieces Miss Black and Mrs. Davidson, Mrs. Boggs and Col J.W. Dunlop (nephew). The incident with the lost colours is known as "Rorke's Drift".
