Will
- Pg 28-29. Pg 454 Jacob Gum Will 2 Jul 1820; 1 Aug 1820 (Pendleton Co Will Bk IV p. 39)
- Bequeath:
- To wife, Dolly Gum, 4 mulch cows and one heifer, two mares,
- To son, Jesse a colt, out of one of the thirteen head of sheep, to have first choice of the flock of ten hogs
- To wife, all my part of the estate I got of Michael Arbogast Sr’s dec’d as my wife’s legacy
- To my eldest son, Isaac Gum, I will him all the property I gave him when he left me
- To my 2nd son, Adam Gum, I will to his all that I gave him when he left me and all the lands he now lives on which I gave him a title for
- To my 3 eldest daus, I will unto them all that which I gave them when they left me except my daughter Polly that is married to William Fleisher he is to pay back to my estate thirty dollars.
- To my youngest daughter, Nelly, I will unto her a horse beast worth sixty dollars, three cows & calves, two heffers, and eight head of sheep, one new spinning wheel, saddle and Bridldle (sic), one bed and furniture, one bedstead and such household and kitchen furniture that my wife shall see proper to give her.
- To my son, Jacob, I will and bequeath unto him one part of the plantation that I now live on from a Red oak tree up above the bars toward George Collins and crossing the meadow straight by the Millberry tree to Henry Arbogasts line and from said Red oak tree up along the west side of ridge runs nearly a north course to my son Adams line and the land that lies in between Adams land and Henry Arbogasts land and the two lines from said red oak tree. I allow my son Jacob by paying my son Isaac one hundred dollars to be paid in two years from the date of this will and it is my will and desire that Jacob, my son, is to keep two cows the summer season in pasture for his mother and it is my will and desire that my son, Jesse, is to have the balance of my plantation that I now live on is and it is my will also that my son Jesse do keep his mother in grain and meat and every necessary that she stand in need of.
- To my son, Jesse, 2 horses and one cow as long as his mother lives, one wind mill, one barrow, two plows, two pair hors (sic) gears, one half wagon or yailky (sic) wagon to have a choice of 2 heifers, two hors (sic), 2 clevishes, one pair of Breach Bands, one flax brake and to have it all as long as his mother lives and then all to be sold and divided amongst my four daughters, except one horse and 2 heiffers and one plow and the wagon which he is to keep as long as he pleases
- To son Jessee is to pay one hundred dollars to my daughter Sarah to be paid in two years after his mother’s death and it is my will and desire that after my death all the remainder of my moveable estate be sold and equally divided amongst my daughters
- Appoint my son, Adam and my wife, Dolly Gum, executors of this my last will and testament

John Gum was not on Capt. Peter Hull's list with his brothers Isaac, Jacob, and William at Yorktown in 1777.
"Peter Hull, Capt. 1777, and as such commanded a troop of cavalry in Yorktown. Muster roll of his company, 2nd Battalion, Augusta County Militia, 1779, taken from a list written by Lt. Seybert, and given in Morton's History of Highland County, Virginia. Privates: Isaac Gum, Jacob Gum, William Gum.7(Shankland’s Warrants and Surveys)
