Jacob Bumgardner, of Scott, Russell & Wythe Co., VA & Blount Co., TN
Facts and Events
Disambiguation
NOT to be confused with a different Jacob Bumgardner (1795-1875) who married Edith Davisson abt. 1828, and migrated from Virginia to Massac County, Illinois and Lawrence County Ohio. Some internet trees and also Find-A-Grave have combined them both into a single person without looking at the records that clearly show them as separate persons. Also, the other Jacob Bumgardner would have only been abt. 16 years old in 1812, so he certainly would NOT have been able to marry Rebecca Patterson in 1812 as marriage records show. The Find-A-Grave contributor has been messaged to correct the Find-A-Grave page, but so far has refused.
About Jacob Bumgardner
This Jacob Bumgardner was born abt. 1791 in Virginia and appears to have lived in Augusta County, Virginia in 1810 [U.S. Census], his parentage has not yet been established. He likely married 1st, Rebecca Patterson in April 1812 [First Marriage record of Augusta County, VA, pg. 59]. They had two children together:
- 1. George Washington Bumgardner, b. abt. 1813 in Wythe Co., VA.
- 2. John Nye Bumgardner b. abt. 1814 in Wythe Co, VA, d. 1863 in Elliott Co., KY.
Rebecca Patterson is said to have died abt. 1816-1818 in nearby Wythe County, Virginia, and her poor health is referenced in a letter that Jacob wrote to Rebecca Patterson's brother, John Patterson of Adair County, Kentucky, dated 7 July 1816.
Jacob married 2nd, Margaret "Peggy" Moyer on 4 May 1818 in Wythe County, VA [Virginia Marriages, 1785-1940]. They had at least 5 children together and perhaps one daughter that appears to have died young. [1830 Census records].
- 1. Mary "Polly" Baumgardner, b. abt. 1824 in Wythe Co, VA.
- 2. Sgt. Jacob Baumgardner, b. abt. 1829 in Wythe Co, VA, d. 26 June 1864, died in the Atlanta Campaign in the Civil War. He married Harriet Kegley, 19 Oct 1854 in Wythe Co., VA0
- 3. Cooper Bumgardner, b. 22 Oct 1833 in Wythe Co., VA, d. 24 Mar 1905 in Blount Co., TN, married Rebecca A. Rhyne on 7 Feb 1856 in Blount Co., TN
- 4. Andrew Baumgardner, b. abt. 1836 in Wythe Co., TN
- 5. David Kindred Baumgardner, b. 28 Dec. 1841 in Wythe Co., TN, d. 7 Oct 1916 in Sawtelle, Los Angeles Co., CA. He married Rachel Adaline Taylor on 6 Sep 1844 in Blount Co., TN
Jacob and Margaret Bumgardner are listed in the 1820 Census in Scott Co., VA [formed in 1814 from parts of Russell, Lee and Washington Counties]. Note: in his 1816 letter to his then brother-in-law John Patterson, Jacob Bumgardner mentions his intention to purchase a lot and small tract of land in nearby Russell County, part of which became Scott County in 1814, so this Census record certainly supports that the same Jacob Bumgardner that married 1st, Rebecca Patterson is the same one that married Margaret "Peggy" Moyer in nearby Wythe County in 1818. Russell County, VA Deeds do indeed show that Jacob purchased two lots in March 1819 as shown in the records below.
In the 1830, 1840 and 1850 Census records in Wythe County, Virginia. In 1860, Jacob and Margaret Bumgardner are listed as living in Blount County, Tennessee, where their sons Cooper Bumgardner and David Bumgardner also acquired land in 1865 and 1869, respectfully.
Jacob Bumgardner likely died sometime between 1860-1870 in Blount County, Tennessee, as he does not appear in 1870 Census Records. Additional research is ongoing to find his will or estate records.

Jacob Baumgardner to John Patterson, 7 July 1816. - Baumgardner, Jacob (Wythe County, VA) to John Patterson. Letter. 7 July 1816. Privately held by Bruce Patterson, [address for private use]. 2008. (To) Mr. John Patterson Adair County, State of Kentucky 22 miles from Columbia Courthouse(From)Wythe Co, July 11, 1816 (date of arrival to Adair) Wythe County, VA July the 7, 1816
Dear Brother and sisters,
By this I let you know that we received your letter which give us grate satisfaction to here from you (…?) move in this life. But believe me (sis/this?) it has afflicted us very much to here that you have lost your wife and likewise sister Polly to think that a cold and silent grave (grace?) should embrace (there hands?).
I received your letter the 29 of June last. Dear brother I have wrote 4 or 5 letters to you but it appears to be a thing impossable for you to git them. I should have come to see you but hurry of buysness and urgance of afairs have hindred my willingness in the first place. Rebeckah has been sick very much since we have been married. We have two children both boys George Washington and John (B?) Nye. With her first one she lost her left brest and lay (quie?t) 4 months and bett (hole in letter - maybe bettered?) and then with the next she she lost her write brest. But they have both mended and she gives (seed or suds?) out of both. Sir it appears that it pleases god to keep us seperated from one another ever since I have been (hurried?) (by?) our family. We can’t (have?) no more at this time but write a few lines to each other. But I hope that we will one day meet face to face so that our joy may be filled. You need not to look for me this fall for I expect to start to Rusel County the 25th of this month in order to purchice a lot and a small track of land containing 150 akers that I have partly agreed for it is not more than one mile from the coast. I dwo (do?) think it will be the gratist place for me that I can find. The best kind of wheat is selling there for fifty cts and excelant water. I dwo expect to du grate bysness there if I (wonst) git (fixed?) there. I should be very glad if you would come and see us this fall if any of you can make it (….?) with out ingering your selves. I dwo expect you will find us in Russell County VA where the court house is now to be.
I wrote a letter to Mr. James Kidmane (?) Kidmore (?) and have not rcvd any answer yet. I have no more.
Friends But remember our love to all (there is giving?)
