Stephens, Isaac - born 12/25/1760 near Winchester, Virginia; moved age 2 with father to Montgomery County, Virginia, where he entered service 1780 in Virginia regiment; moved in 1799 to Wayne County, Kentucky, where granted Pension in 1832; died there 6/28/1833; married 12/18/1782 to Rebecca Havens, on New River, Montgomery County, Virginia, who was born 10/19/1765; widow granted Pension 1839 in Wayne County, Kentucky & died there 6/29/1843; children: Elizabeth (b. 1784, married Mr. Dick, resided 1851 in Wayne County, Kentucky), James, William, Rhoda (b. 1786, married 3/22/1806 to Mr. Hayden, resided 1851 in Wayne County, Kentucky), Rebecca, Nancy (married Mr. Anderson), Zilpha (married Mr. Catron), & Gordon C., all living in 1851 except Rebecca & William, when Elizabeth Dick applied for Pension then there for self and surviving siblings & they were granted Pension arrears due mother; soldier's brother mentioned but not named was Killed in Action at Battle of Camden; query letter in file says soldier was son of Isaac. - two errors contained in this source: (1) birthdate was listed as 12/25/1766, but based upon his Revolutionary War Service Declaration on Southern Campaign Revolutionary Pension Statements & Rosters, he was 72 years old in 1832, making him born in 1760; (2) Isaac appears to have been the son of Peter Stephens, not Isaac, as listed in the query letter in his file.

Isaac Stephens served in the Revolutionary War and was at the in the Battle of Guilford and Camden and Siege of 96. In 1799, the family moved to the area which became Wayne County, Kentucky. He became a prosperous Farmer and, later, a Baptist Minister.

- On this 27th day of August 1832 personally appeared before the County Court of this County of Wayne and State of Kentucky Isaac Stephens, a Resident of Wayne County, in the County of Wayne and State of Kentucky. Isaac Stephens aged seventy two years about next Christmas 1832 who being first duly sworn, according to law, doth on his Oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the Benefit of the Provision made by the Act of Congress, passed June the 4th 1832 that he enlisted in the Army of the United States in the Fall of the Year 1780 under a certain Daniel Trigg in Montgomery County in the State of Virginia and served in the Regiment commanded by Col. Haws of Virginia the name of the Regiment not recollected, in the line, under the following officers. My Captains name I served under, was Bently his christian name not recollected. My Col name was Col Haws, his christian name not recollected. My Captain Buntly was later taken prisoner at Ninety Six, I then served under Capt. Barbony? his christian name not recollected. I the said Isaac Stephens engaged to serve 18 months, the precise time of my Enlistment not recollected but some months before the Battle of Guilford and served actually Twenty months before I could get my discharge. I joined or enlisted in Montgomery County west of New River in the State of Virginia, was marched to Chesterfield Court House and joined our Regiment under said Col Haws where we were exercised for some time. We then marched to North Carolina I was at the Battle of Guilford. Thence I was marched to and the Battle of Campden, where I had a Brother killed. Thence I was marched to and at ninety Six, which we besieged about one month or more at which place my Captain Bently was taken Prisoner. and I was after Commanded by Captain Barbary, General Green was our Commander. We were frequently engaged in smaller skirmishing parties of British and Tories thru North Carolina South Carolina and Georgia. The place not sufficiently recollected was regularly discharged I think in North Carolina in writing by my Major his name not recollected and this discharge now lost I was born in the State of Virginia near Winchester and was after two years raised in Montgomery County, Virginia + removed from Virginia to the County of Wayne, where I now live I the said Isaac Stephens here by relinquish every claim whatsovere to a pension or annuity except the Present and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of agency on any State.

We were frequently engaged in smaller skirmishing parties of British and Tories thro North Carolina South Carolina & Georgia the places not sufficiently Recollected, was Regularly discharged I think in North Carolina in writing, by my Major, his name not recollected [Smith Snead], and the discharge now lost I was born in the state of Virginia near Winchester & was after two years raised in Montgomery County Virginia & Removed from Virginia to the county of Wayne, where I now live I the said Isaac Stephens hereby relinquish every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the Present, and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency In any state Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforesaid (Signature) Isaac [his mark] Stephens NOTES: A size roll compiled at Chesterfield Courthouse after 1 Sep 1780 includes the following: Isaac Stephens/ age 19/ height 5’ 11”/ farmer/ born in Augusta County/ residing in Montgomery County/ brown hair/ black eyes/ fair complexion/ enlisted 11 Sep 1780 for 18 months. On 26 Aug 1839 Rebekah Stephens, aged 73 on 19 Oct 1838, applied for a pension stating that she married Isaac Stephens on 16 Dec 1782, and he died 28 June 1833 “with bodily pains.” She stated that the date of marriage was from a family register recorded by John Brittain, a Montgomery-County school master. On 26 May 1851 Elizabeth Dick, 67, child of Isaac and Rebecca Stephens, applied for a pension, stating that her mother’s maiden name was Rebecca Havens, that she was married on New River in Montgomery County, and she died on 29 June 1843. She stated that her parents had children named Elizabeth, James, William, Rhoda, and Rebecca Stephens before 1794, and that they moved to Wayne County in 1799. Elizabeth Dick listed the other children who survived their mother as James Stephens, Rhoda Hayden, Nancy Anderson, Zilpha Catron, and Gordon C. Stephens. Rhoda Hayden gave her age as 65 at the time she made a deposition on 16 May 1851, and stated that she was married on 22 Mar 1806. The file jacket includes misfiled papers relating to the application of Sally Holt, daughter of Jane Stephens, pensioner and widow of Henry Stephens (W6189).

Revolutionary War Veteran Isaac Stephens was born in his own words, "near Winchester" Virginia to Peter Stephens, Jr. and Anna Maria Chrisman. Place of birth as well as other facts about Isaac are revealed in his military pension application and that of his wife and a daughter.
Isaac's family removed to Montgomery County, Virginia, where after serving in the American Revolution, he met and married Miss Rebecca Havens. They in turn removed to Wayne County, Ky to raise their children, Elizabeth, James, William, Rhoda, and Rebecca born in VA; Nancy, Zilpha and Gordon, born in KY.
