Facts and Events
Henry Hubach was born in Engalnd however he was baptised when he was 16 years old. Information from Ann Henry whose birth date was 24 Feb 1797 was baptised 10 Oct 1813, his mother and father Henry and Phoebe were both listed deceased on the register. It gives Henry's address as Great Alie Street London (I know exactly where this is) and his occupation as Victualler (wine again !) At that time 1813 I have found out that in Great Alie Street was the German Lutheran Church (still there today) a pub called the White Swan, still there, and next to the pub was a Victuallers shop (not there now) I am assuming this was where Henry lived and worked. This area of London was predominately German at that time. Its a stones throw from the London docks where some of the immigrant ships from Europe stopped on their way to America, I can only presume that the original Henry (his father) jumped off there either with the elusive Phoebe or met her in London. Stories coming down through to his descendants via two of his children say that either his parents or possibly just his father was originally from Bavaria or Germany and considering the history of that area and that his english born, great grandchildren who are now deceased were passing on this story I would say that they were both referring to Bavaria, Germany. Using FamilySearch.org also provides credence to this information as it appears the greater majority of Hubach births, deaths and marriages during the 1700's occurred in Bavaria, Germany. 1841 Census: Occupation Cooper (Barrel Maker), living with wife Maria and family in [Tower Hamlets,] Whitechapel. 1851 Census: A Cooper aged 52, living with wife Maria and family in Bow, 1861 Census: A Cooper aged 63, living with wife Maria and familly in Bedford Terrace, Bethnal Green, married daughter Agnes Simpson and grandaughter Agnes Simpson are living here too aged 1, Henry was 67 years old in 1864 when according to the UK records of deaths, there are 2 deaths recorded for Henry Hubach. As it was not a common name it could be assumed that one of these deaths was Henry and the other was his son of the same name. Most likely the correct one for Henry was recorded in the March quarter in Bethnal Green where he was living with his family during the 1861 census. References
