"Gilbert went West during the gold rush in 1849. He made the trip by boat sailing around Cape Horn, and I have his seaman's papers dated 30 November 1849, in which he is described as 'twenty years of thereabouts, of the height five feet nine inches, dark complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, born in Andover, in the State of Massachusetts.' Whether or not he found gold is not known, but as result of this voyage I have three pieces of scrimshaw that he carved. He married Abbie Reynolds Sargent presumably after returning from the West. -"The Antecedants of Gilbert Barker Wardwell (1829-1895) and his Descendants" by David Sargent Wardwell"
