California Gold Rush 1849 Enlisted as a Sergeant on 29 September 1862 at the age of 34 Enlisted in Company C, 23rd Infantry Regiment Maine on 29 September 1862 Mustered out on 15 July 1863 in Portland, ME "Gilbert went West during the gold rush in 1849. He made the trip by boat sailing around Cape Horn, and I have his seaman's papers dated 30 November 1849, in which he is described as 'twenty years of thereabouts, of the height five feet nine inches, dark complexion, brown hair, hazel eyes, born in Andover, in the State of Massachusetts.' Whether or not he found gold is not known, but as result of this voyage I have three pieces of scrimshaw that he carved. He married Abbie Reynolds Sargent presumably after returning from the West. -"The Antecedants of Gilbert Barker Wardwell (1829-1895) and his Descendants" by David Sargent Wardwell" Sailed to California about the bark Daniel Webster which sailed from Long Wharf, Boston on 23 September 1849. The ship arrived at Rio de Janeiro on 27 November 1849, arrived at Valparaiso, Chile 20 February 1850. Arrived at San Francisco, 29 April 1850. -Andover Historical Society Collection In Swampscott at 1860 census. Living in Swampscott at 1870 Census, personal estate valued at $900.
