Following family tradition, apprenticed as a cordwainer, as were his younger brother Thomas and Hiram. In Baltimore by 1835. In the Baltimore census of 1840, his household including a young negro female servant. As the B&O Railroad moved westward, so did the Wardwell Family. In Grantsville at the 1850 census, $650 in real estate. After the death of his wife, family moved to Oakland, MD. -Samuel Wardwell of Andover & A Line of his Descendants-Stuart Byles & Marjorie Wardwell Otten

In Allegany County Maryland at 1860 census with personal estate valued at $100. Registered voter in Allegany County 10 October 1866.

Notice in Cumberland Alleganian 17 April 1846: Dissolution: The subscribers have this day dissolved partnership by mutual consent. S.W. Wardwell is authorized to settle the business of the late firm, and will continue the same on his own account. S.W. Wardwell, W.H. Wardwell.
