"In the death of Stephen H. Wardwell, Swampscott has lost an old time and highly respected citizen. Active during his business career, he brought thousands of dollars into the town, and after retiring from the hotel business he led a quitet life, partly due to his failing health, and partly to his devotion to a loving family. There is hardly a man in the town who was better known than Mr. Wardwell, although he never sought any political office of any sort. Mr. Wardwell was born in Andover on October 9, 1816, the son of Simon Willard and Margaret Wardwell, and has lived in Swampscott for 66 years. For the past 35 years, it has been the custom of the deceased to spend the winter months in Ormond, Fla., where he has a brother, and last October he and his son, S.H. Wardwell and wife, accompanied him to that place. He was taken sick Feb. 4 and in the latter part of March, R.B. Wardwell of this town was sent for. The two brothers returned home with him on April 7. The relatives who survive are two sons, Stephen H. and Robert B., both of this town, three daughters, Mrs. John G. Stanley, Mrs. Curtis Merritt of Swampscott, and Mrs. B. B. Buck of Newton Centre, and one brother J.B. Wardwell of Ormond, Fla., and two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Ware and Miss Nettie C. Wardwell of Clifton." -Lynn Daily Item, May 6, 1907 Death record lists middle name as Harrison. Died of Old Age. Living at 174 Humphrey Street at death. References
