George Whipple, son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Conklin) Whipple was born on 28 December 1827 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a steamboat engineer. On 4 August 1856 he married Belle Drew of Covington, Kentucky. George was a steamboat engineer on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. In 1853 the family moved to Burlington (Des Moines County), Iowa. He was commissioned into the Navy in 1862, but reportedly didn’t like the way he was treated and "resigned". George and Belle had six children, four of whom died very young. The 1900 census shows George and Belle living in Des Moines County, Iowa with their niece, Jessie K. Blair, age 34. The Des Moines County, Iowa probate index lists records for George Whipple on 11 December, 1914 and for Isabella D. Whipple on 11 December 1914 and 15 February 1915.
