George Washington Poage is the great-grandson of Robert Poage. Robert was one of the first Magistrates of Augusta County, VA. George's father John, the founder of Ripley, Ohio accompanied Col. Washington on the Braddock campaign and became much attached to him on several occasions in entertained General George Washington.

George W. Poage was a person of fine appearance, and his resemblance to the portraits of Washington— of whom he was a namesake—was frequently remarked upon. An evergreen prayer meeting was conducted at his house on silent Sabbaths. He loved to "wail with judicious care" the hymns and tunes that were sung by the Covenanting ancestry in Scotland. While there wa.s much singing and much reading and much praying, but few things were sung, read, and prayed, and so the minds of the worshippers were concentrated on the few things needful—the forgiveness of sins through the blood of Jesus, a new heart and a right spirit. Advanced in years, Mr Poage went west with his family and settled in Missouri.

    He did marry twice:

Margaret (Rankin) Poage, was born about 1783 and were married on Apr. 9 1800 in Pocahontas, co. Margaret passed away on Dec. 6 1814. There was one daughter, Ann Anna (Poage) Wanless, (abt 1802, died 1839)

He married Elizabeth Beard on May 18, 1816 in Greenbrier co., VA
