He was a hardworking ambitious yourh, as he worked on his father's farm with slaves, who later took the Heatherly Family name after the Civil War. . . When George W. left home to join the Union Army, he left his mother, Katy or Catherine, in the care of Uncle Tom and Aunt Emma (slaves) at the family home. After his return, he gave them a home and farm at what is today (1978) Beard Training Center. When the Civil War ended, Uncle Tom and Emma and their little family did not want to leave.

"While he was serving with the Union Army as a Corporal in Co. A 1st inf., he met Miss Demarice Siler at her parent's home in Kentucky. They were married April 2, 1865. They came to live in the large two story home built by his parents on Powell River."
