George Hubert Chaffer was baptised on 12th April 1874 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of Elizabeth Eliza Chaffer, formerly Churcher, and her husband George Chaffer, a miller and carter, who sometimes used his stepfather's surname, Grant. George senior died in 1876, when young George was only two years old.

The 1881 census finds George living with his widowed mother and siblings at Bognor. He has yet to be researched after 1881.
