George Chaffer was baptised on 3rd December 1815 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of an unmarried 18 year old called Mary Chaffer. When George was married in 1851 he gave his father's name as Michael Crees, publican. When George was about four years old his mother married a Charles Grant, after which George sometimes took his stepfather's surname.
George appears in the 1851 census living with his mother and stepfather at Sidlesham. At that time he was unmarried and working as a miller. He was married on 20th September 1851, aged 35 (although claiming to be 20), to an Elizabeth Chandler or Churcher. They appear to have had five children together. They appear in the 1861 census living at Mill in Sidlesham, and by 1871 were living at Aldingbourne.
George appears to have died in 1876, aged 60. At the time of his death he was living at North Bersted, but he was buried back in his native Sidlesham on 28th October 1876.
