Elizabeth Eliza Churcher was baptised on 26th December 1831 at Alverstoke in Hampshire, daughter of a waterman named Benjamin Churcher and his wife Mary. Elizabeth appears in the 1841 census living at Hardway in the parish of Alverstoke with her parents and siblings. By the time of the 1851 census, Elizabeth was working as a house servant for a miller named John Kiln at Sidlesham in Sussex.

On 20th September 1851, aged 19, Elizabeth married a man named George Chaffer (who sometimes used his stepfather's surname, Grant). George was a miller from Sidlesham, and therefore quite likely worked for Elizabeth's employer John Kiln. George was 35 years old when they married. Elizabeth and George appear in the 1861 census living at Sidlesham with their four children. By the 1871 census they had moved a few miles away to Aldingbourne, where George was working as a carter, and they had had a fifth child. Some time in the early 1870s they appear to have had a sixth child born at South Bersted.

George died in 1876, aged 60. At the time of his death he was living at North Bersted, but he was buried back at his native Sidlesham.

The 1881 census finds Elizabeth living in the town of Bognor with three of her children. She was working as a nurse. On that census they all used the surname Grant with Chaffer as a middle name. She has yet to be traced after the 1881 census.
