Facts and Events
Evelyn Lucille Sharai attended the country one-room schoolhouse on Yore Ave. She later attended Benton Harbor High School, from which she graduated at the age of 16. During a short commercial employment, Evelyn met Andrew Zamiara, who was a registered Pharmacist at Badt Blos. Drug Store in Benton Harbor. Both Evelyn and Andrew were very active in the American Cancer Society fund raisers and at St. Adalbet's, especially while their children were in school. Evelyn liked to sew, crochet, knit and make decorated Christmas egg ornaments, a craft she learned from her Aunt Lee Sharai Ringgenberg. After Andrew had a heart attack in the 1960's, Evelyn went to work at Universal Variety, a dime store on Bridge and Lexington NW. She worked there for many years as manager. She was joined by her daughter Pat and two of her granddaughters, Karen and Debbi. Evelyn left the dime store when she married Harold Allen a widower from Sparta, Ml. She sold the house on Fourth St. in Grand Rapids and moved in with Harold at 56 Washington, Sparta. References
