Andrew Walter Zamiara was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan of Polish immigrant parents. He graduated from Union High School, then attended Ferris State College Pharmacy School, graduating in 1934. He met his wife, Evelyn Lucille Sharai, while he was working at Badt Brothers Drug Store in Benton Harbor. They married and had two children. He was the owner of Zamiara Drug Store (right next door to the meat market run by his brothers Joe and Frank, and his sister Gertrude) from 1937 until 1944. He sold the store to go into the service, which he entered on December 4, 1944. At the time of his induction he was preparing to enter Vanderbilt University for Ph.M. He was a Technician fourth grade with the 9222nd Transportation Service Unit-Transportation Corps, medical detachment, Ships Complement. San Francisco Port of Embarkation, Fort Mason, California. He was awarded the American Theater Ribbon, Assiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and World War 11 Victory Medal. Andrew was given a discharge November 14, 1945 from Letterman General Hospital, San Francisco, California. Upon his return from the service, Andrew worked at various pharmacies, including the old Sunshine Hospital on Fuller Ave. N.E. His hobbies included woodworking, and he made several Nativity stables, bird feeders, toy boxes, and coffee tables. References
