Maurice spent the early part of his life in the country attending country school. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1922, then attended the Detroit College of Law, earning his law degree in 1926 at the age of 20. While attending the law college, he attended the College of the City of Detroit, which later became Wayne State Universiy, for some additional credit courses. He passed the State Bar exam but had to wait until he was 21 to be admitted to practice. He moved to Highland Park where lie lived and worked. He served as the Chairman of the City Planning Commission, especially interested in the City's Master Plan and its first urban renewal project. He was also on the School Board of the City. He was admitted to practice for the United States Supreme Court in Washington. An active member of the Methodist Church, Maurice taught an adult Sunday School class and worked with the youth of the church, serving as superintendent of the Sunday School. Maurice was also Treasurer of the Methodist Church Board of Education for many years. Maurice was also on the Conference Commission on Higher Education on the Wayne State Wesley Foundation; Director of the Retirement Homes of the Detroit Conference of the Methodist Church; and on the Highland Park Boys Club. He was also involved with Kiwais Club, of which he was past president, a charter member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Highland Park, Boy Scouts, and a past president of the UP Bar Assoc.
