Russell graduated from a country grade school and Benton Harbor High School. After graduation he went to Detroit, MI where he obtained employment first in a railroad office, then in testing laboratories of the Chevrolet Motor Car Company where he met Ruth Halstead. He later went to work at the American Seed Company and became a part owner. After a time he sold his interest in the seed company and went to Lansing, Michigan where he obtained employment in the Lansing Pattern Works. Together with his associates they purchased that business.
