Facts and Events
Enoch B. BUNTYN was born about 1833 in Georgia (probably Pike County). He was enumerated on the 1840 and 1850 censuses in the household of his father. On 03 January 1858, Enoch married Elizabeth B. BAGWELL in Spalding County, Georgia. They were the parents of three known children, all born in Georgia, between 1858 and 1868. Enoch has not been located on the 1860 census, although his wife and young son were enumerated with Bagwell family members in Spalding County, Georgia. Enoch presumably served in the military during the Civil War, but as yet, no record of military service has been found. Enoch and his family have not been located on the 1870 census. Elizabeth (wife) was enumerated as a "widow" on the 1880 census in Upson County, Georgia. Enoch probably died at some point between 1868 and 1880. His date and place of death and place of burial is unknown. While researching this family, I made the acquaintance of Mr. Alton Buntyn, Griffin, Georgia (now deceased). Alton was unsure of how he was connected to the Buntyn family, and this was his story: "Alton's great-grandfather had returned home during the Civil War and found his home burned down. He presumed his family was dead and returned to war. When the war was over, he remarried and started a new family. Alton had never heard or didn't remember hearing this great-grandfather's first name. Alton's grandfather was Billy Buntyn, who had a sister named Fannie, and a half-brother named J.J. Peugh, who was a Baptist preacher and had moved to Texas." Since all known/researched Buntyn men who remained in Georgia during the Civil War were sons of Joseph Buntyn, my search focused on Enoch, Frank and Morgan. Morgan was not known to have married or had children and died at age 19. Frank is my ancestor, and this was not a story I had ever heard about him. So I focused on Enoch, who was very much a mystery to me. As I searched for Billy and Fannie Buntyn and J.J. Peugh, I started to find information which led me to believe that they were the children of Elizabeth Bagwell, who had married Enoch Buntyn. This family reconnection is still a work in progress.
