Facts and Events
She may be listed in the 1820 and 1830 census with her paternal grandparents, John & Sally Shankland in Nicholas Co., Kentucky. I believe she emigrated to Nebraska in the 1880's with her sons George and Charles and her daughter Theresa (Shankland) Mathon. "In 1878 [Steward Mathon] went to Warren county, Indiana, and engaged in farming there, and on December 23, 1880, married Evangeline Shankland, of Indiana, a native of that state, daughter of Jesse and Elizabeth Shankland, the former of whom died in Indiana in the sixties, and the latter in Custer county, Nebraska, in May, 1907. " {"Compendium of History, Reminiscence & Biography of Nebraska", <http://www.rootsweb.com/~neresour/OLLibrary/Comp_NE/index.htm 1912>} In the 1870 census for Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana, there is a Elisabeth Shankland, age 52, born Kentucky, with $3,900 real estate and $1,000 personal. Her children are George W., 24, farm laborer; (Elomina?)[probably Theresa Evangeline], 16; Erminda, 12; and Charles E., 9. {page 356 } In the 1880 census for Steuben, Warren Co., Indiana, Elizabeth Shankland is a widow, age 59 from Kentucky. Her son Geo. W. is a farmer age 34; 'Theres E.' is 24; and Charles E. is 19 -- all born in Kentucky. {p.48a} In the 1900 census for Cliff, Custer Co., Nebraska, Geo. W. is a farmer, single, age 55, born Aug. 1844 in Indiana. His parents were born Kentucky. His mother Elizabeth is 81, born Dec. 1818 in Kentucky (father Kentucky, mother Pennsylvania) widow, with 4 of 11 children living. Living with them are [possibly children of Emeranda] Fannie M., born Sept. 1890 in Nebraska (parents Indiana), 8, listed as 'daughter' ('adopted'?); and Winford Gibbs, nephew, born Jan. 1884 in Nebraska (parents Indiana). {p.71, T623, roll 921} She is probably the Elizabeth Shankland buried in the Cliff Cemetery in Merna, Custer Co., Nebraska. "Elizabeth Shankland, died May 9, 1907, aged 88 y 5m, 21d." {Custer Co Nebraska USGenWeb, <http://www.rootsweb.com/~necuste2/Cemeters/cliff.htm>, Oct 2003} Her daughter and son-in-law S. Mathon are also buried there. |
