Facts and Events
Cremated at Bradenton, Manatee, FL. with ashes in Des Moines Woodland Cemetery with husband, Ralph. See Burial Notes for Ralph Braught. Address: 22nd & Woodland Ave. Des Moines, IA Name: Elizabeth Ann RILEY Address 1: 22nd & Woodland Ave. City: Des Moines State: IA See Riley and Ruggles records. Betty graduated Des Moines, IA East HighSchool. She eloped to Bethany, Mo. while a high school senior, but they did not tell anyone for nearly one year. Obviously, marriage certificate lies about their age. Betty became well known for her excellent cooking skills, which began while she virtually reared her siblings. Mom Worked variously as nurse, dental technician, Post Mistress (at Fallbrook, CA) and co-owner of Rockford, IL Fashionette Women's Apparels. She and husband, Ralph, cared for her mother, Rose Riley, for several years before Rosie's death at Pella, IA. She was president of Iowa Osteopathic Auxiliary, member of Eastern Star, and strong supporter of her husband's great activity in Kiwanis. They were both always very active church members where ever they lived (Church of Christ, Methodist, Baptist). She was about 4' 10" ; of constant energy despite constant pains that she rarely mentioned. Had life-long serious heart problem, including open-heart surgery, and finally died of massive heart attacks. Mom was a bit of a well-intentioned manipulator with her Irish wit and charm. She forever saw the positive sides of everything. I could not have loved or admired her more. I found US Dept. of Commerce certified document verifying that Elizabeth Riley Braught of PO. Box 410, Knoxville, IA 50138 was listed in the 1920 Census for Wright County, MN, enumerated as a daughter born in Iowa to Lew and Rosa Riley. Ancestry.com reports Florida Death Index 1970-1998 shows Betty Ann Braught certificate 88037 in Manatee, FL died 23 Nov 1979 and birth date of 31 Jan 1915 (correct with my data). From my interview of 3Aug. 1984 with Dad he shared some of Mom's pre-marriage information as shared here: Mom was born in Carlisle, IA, but at age 4 the family moved to Monticella, MN where she attended school at Atwater, MN. Her parents divorced after her father lost their farm and part ownership of a local bank from the 1929 great depression. At that very young age Betty stepped up to mothering the entire family. They moved back to Iowa at Indianola and she entered school at Scotch Ridge Elementary and then Elm Grove Jr. High. When they moved to Des Moines she attended Lincoln Jr. High and then East High School (where they met). During WWII while Dad was in the Pacific campaign she graduated from Dental Lab School and started making dental plates at night. In the daytime she worked as receptionist for Dr. Kennedy Gale Hoffman Keene, MD office in Beaverdale (Des Moines north west side. After the war and they returned to Des Moines from CA, she worked as receptionist for Dr. Beryl Freeman, D.O. who was Dad's official volunteer practicum supervisor and mentor at her downtown office in the Equitabile Bldg. After Dad graduated from Still Medical School and began practice in Pocahontas, and became Secretary of the Iowa Osteopathic Auxillary (I misunderstood earlier that she was auxillary president) when John Mattern, DO, was state president. She served as Dad's receptionist at every one of his offices until they built the Fashionette Shop. References
