- ↑ Ralph and Betty secretly eloped to Bethany, MO for illegal marriage (under age) while they were DM East High School student seniors. They would have been expelled from school if caught and anticipated that they could not get legal support from their parents (later proven true). UPon graduation they confessed to their parents and after stuggles (primarily opposition from Betty's mother, disapproval by Ralph's mother, but strong support from Ralph's father, they were allowed to proceed as married. Two years later they had their child, Loran (there may have been a later miscarriage, according to Betty).
When I became active in genealogy I visited Bethany, MO court house to obtain a copy of the their marriage record. It has been filed the day after the actual marriage and gave their ages as "legal". Bethany was a well know "marriage mill" typically bending most marriage laws.
