Facts and Events
Elizabeth Green was baptised on 2nd July 1699 at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, daughter of Sarah Green, formerly Crismas, and her husband William Green. Her next sighting is on 15th November 1722 when she was married at North Mymms in Hertfordshire to a tailor named John Swallow. Although they married at North Mymms, the marriage register records that he was from Kimpton and she from Wheathampstead, both of which are over eight miles from North Mymms. After their marriage, they returned to Wheathampstead, where their daughter Sarah was baptised less than three months after their marriage. Sarah was followed by a son William in 1724, then two daughters, Elizabeth and Martha, who both died as babies. When they buried their daughter Martha, Elizabeth's mother Sarah was buried on the same day, possibly suggesting an illness in the family. In 1728, young William died aged 4, thus Elizabeth and John were left with only one surviving child from four births. They went on to have a further two children, John and Mary, who survived infancy, giving them three children who lived. Elizabeth lived to see at least ten grandchildren born in her lifetime, with her first known grandchild born in 1752. John died in 1767, aged 68. He and Elizabeth had been married for nearly 45 years. Elizabeth outlived John by less than a year, being buried at Wheathampstead on 19th May 1768. She was 68. References
