clipping Fort Wayne Sentinel, Sept 5 1899; "Elijah J. Faulkner, who for many years had been a resident of Aboite township,. died Tuesday mornig at his home seven miles west of the city, from cancer. Mr. Faulkner was a native of Ohio and was sixty-three years of age. The wife and several children survive. Funeral services will be held Wednesday from the church near his late residence and the interment will be at Lindenwood."

"According to family lore Elijah's mother was Amanda S Staman/Stayman. These are variations that the Steme line takes. What is why I play around with it when I have the time. ...One day there will be a breakthrough, right?" Jim Leavell email 3/15/07.

Email from Shirley Thompson:"In response to your quest for Elijah Faulkner's father. It is supposed to be William Faulkner and Amanda Staymates. However I have had no proof of this." 4/18/99

Ellen Baney: My first information was a piece in the paper. "Want to find a record of Elijah Faulkner, bn 1830. his mother was Amanda Staymate Faulkner. She later marrried Samuel Loy and had three children with him. john loy, Hank Loy, and mary Loy in Koscuisko Co.' Some of that has proved to be incorrect."Oct 1999

"I do not know where I got this name but I have William as Elijah Faulkner's father." Aug 1999 ,samt50@juno.com> Shirley

Walt Faulkner: 'The following comments appear in the handwritten family notes passed on to me. I am not certain of their origin; The father of Elijah Faulkner was a Scotsman engineer. He engineered the Penn. RR between Ft. Wayne and Plymouth. Said it wouldn't hold over a sink hole but they insisted he do it anyhow. When he saw it was not going to be O.K. or becuaz he thought it wouldn't, he signed over everything he owned - was fairly well off -- and left. Signed everything to his wife (space for name) of the Potawatomie - Seminole indian Tribe. After he left, she married a Loy. A woman mary klinger is a half-sister to Elijah. Lived around Bourbvon somewhere. Railroad was called Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne and Chicago R.R. when he worked on it. Later changed to Pennsylvania. Assuming the above is cloe to correct, I started research into railrooad history and fund thst the Ohio and Indiana RR was completed to Ft Wayne in October 1854, completed 19 miles from Ft Wayne to Columbia City by 1856, changed to Pittsburg, Ft Wayne and Chicago in May 1856 and pushed on to Plymouth by the end of 1856. (Interlibrary loan of Railroads of Indiana by Richarde Simons and Francis Parker). This could explain the migration of the family from allen county to Marshall. 4/21/99

From Ellen, email, <baneyred@skyenet.net> "Elijah's mother? Elizabeth married Samuel Loy. ...Somewhere I saw that the Loy family were from Preble County, Ohio. That could be the place tolook for the death of William Faulkner who was said to be Elijah's father. I need to check the death of Elizabeth Loy to see if it included her parents names. That would be in Koscuisko Co.

From Jim Leavell, <luckyjim@iwarp.net> April 21, 2005: "Elijah Faulkner is an enigma and the brick wall for tracing that family back. His father disappeared leaving everything to his wife so that she might raise Elijah, then she turned everything over to Samuel Loy and his wife so that they might raise Elijah, and she to disappeared. It seems that Elijah would sometimes claim to have been born in Ohio but other times would claim to have been born in Indiana. My mother told me that Hattie (Hester) was said to have been an authoress.

email from Jim Leavell; March 1, 2007: "Alright Donald now you are being a troublemaker again. Opening up this old speculation about Amanda Staman/Stayman  Perhaps these 2 families are not as distant as we thought.I found an on line tree "Stehman/Staman Genealogy" and probed it a bit.I had not been thinking of various other spellings for Amanda's name and did not realize there was a clue in our possesion that I had been blind to.  Elijah Joseph Faulkner m. Hester Ann Parker b. Preble County, Ohio Their son:Charles Ulysses Faulkner b. 1865 Fort Wayne, Allen County, Indiana m. Clara A. Stevick b. 1870 Allen County, Ohio Clara Stevick is the daughter of:John Lesher Stevick b. 1848 Scotland, Franklin County, Pennsylvania m. Mary Margaret Stemen b. 1851 Marion Township, Allen County, Ohio This we had known. The Stehman/Staman Tree (vstehman@aol.com)shows this part of the story and continues. Mary Margaret Stemen is the daughter of: Samuel Peter Stemen b. 1822 Rush Creek Township, Fairfield County, Ohio  and Isabella Spangler b. 1831 Fairfield County, Ohio Samuel Peter Stemen is the son of:Christian Stemen b. 1799 Rockingham County, Virginia and Margaret Moyer Thus we see that this family was present in the part of Ohio favored by this myth and in the right time period. Perhaps from this we can one day find more clues and prove Elijah's parents."

Stehman/Staman/Stayman are often interchanged. How about Staymate?
