Edward King was born on 6th December 1840 at Caddington, son of a straw plaiter called Susan King, formerly Dean, and her husband James King, an agricultural labourer. He birth certificate specifies that he was born in the part of Caddington parish which was then in Hertfordshire rather than the part which was in Bedfordshire. Edward's baptism record from 24th January 1841 gives the family's abode as Pipers Bottom.
Edward appears in the 1841 census living with his parents, siblings and paternal grandmother at Aley Green in the Hertfordshire part of Caddington parish. The 1851 census finds Edward living with his uncle, John King, and his family. By 1861 Edward was back with his parents at Aley Green and working as an agricultural labourer.
On 17th November 1862, aged 21, Edward married a bonnet sewer called Ann Sharp at Caddington. They went on to have eleven children together between 1863 and 1886, although four died as babies.
Edward's mother died in 1865.
The 1871 census finds Edward, Ann and their children living at Aley Green. In the 1881 census they had moved about five miles south to Redbourn, where they lived on the High Street. They had only recently moved there, as their son born in 1880 gave his place of birth as Aley Green. They did not stay long in Redbourn after the census either, being back in Aley Green by the time their next daughter was born in 1883.
The 1891 census finds Edward, Ann, their children and Ann's widowed mother living at Hill Farm in the Hertfordshire part of Caddington parish.
Edward's father died in 1895.
In 1897 the parish and county boundaries around Caddington were adjusted. A portion of Caddington parish was transferred to become part of a new Markyate parish in Hertfordshire, and the rest of Caddington parish was brought entirely within Bedfordshire rather than straddling the two counties. The new county boundary passed through Aley Green, and the 1901 census finds Edward, Ann, three children and a grandson living in the part of Aley Green which was within the newly created parish of Markyate.
Edward died on 2nd May 1906 in the part of Aley Green in Caddington parish, aged 65. Ann survived him by nearly sixteen years.
