Mary King was baptised on 26th October 1834 at Caddington in Bedfordshire, daughter of a straw plaiter called Susan King, formerly Dean, and her husband James King, an agricultural labourer. Mary appears in the 1841 census living with her parents and siblings at Aley Green in the part of Caddington parish which at that time was in Hertfordshire. Mary was still living with her parents in 1851, when she was described as a plaiter of straw.
Mary had two sons in the mid 1850s: Arthur in 1854 and Alfred in 1856.
On 2nd March 1857, aged 22, Mary married James Bunyan. He had been living next door to Mary and her family at the time of the 1851 census. Mary's two sons took on the name surname Bunyan, and it is entirely possible that James was their father.
After their marriage, Mary and James went on to have another ten children at Caddington between 1858 and 1878, although three died young. In 1861 the family was living at Tipple Hill and James was an agricultural labourer, whilst Mary was a bonnet sewer.
Mary's mother died in 1865.
By 1871 James, Mary, their children and a servant were living at Mill Field in Caddington, with James described as a farmer of 151 acres employing eight men and a boy. James's prosperity did not last; by 1881 he was described as an unemployed farm bailiff.
Some time between 1886 and 1891 the family left Caddington and moved over forty miles north to Barton Seagrave in Northamptonshire, where James worked as a farm labourer.
Back in Caddington, Mary's father died in 1895.
By 1901 Mary and James had moved from Barton Seagrave to the neighbouring village of Burton Latimer, where they lived on Finedon Road.
James died in 1908, aged 78. The 1911 census finds Mary living with her granddaughter Clara and her husband in Isham, close to Burton Latimer. Mary died in Northamptonshire in 1917, aged 82.
