Personal History

Edith "Nanny" (Constable) Smith (1877-1936)

Edith's father, Edward Constable (1841-?), brought his family to America in about 1882 when Edith was 5.

Her daughter, Eleanor Barbara (Smith) Murdock (1901 - 1929), died of a strep throat on July 29, 1929 at age 28 while she and her family were visiting Percy and Edith's summer cottage at Indian Lake, near Dowagiac, Michigan. Her children, Joellen and Margot, were only age 5 and 2. Tragically, penicillin had only been discovered in 1928 and was not widely known and available in 1929.

Initially Joellen and Margot were cared for by Percy and Edith "Gompy and Nanny" Smith, but later her husband Joe's mother Helen "Mocco" Wright Murdock, moved in. Mocco raised Joellen and Margot until Joe remarried to Virginia Sherwood in 1933.

Descended from Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) of England (Wikipedia page)

Constable-family legend believes the "Constable"-line is descended from Sir Thomas More (1478-1535) of England who was famously beheaded by King Henry VIII (Wikipedia Page) for refusing to acknowledge Henry as supreme head of the Church of England and the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. After refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy, he was convicted of treason and executed.

The head of Sir Thomas More is buried in St. Dunstan's Church, Canterbury (as the Archbishop of Canterbury), in the Roper family vault beneath the floor. He was beheaded on Tower Hill July 6, 1535. He was an illustrious Lord Chancellor of England (1529-32), Scholar, Martyr, and Saint.

His daughter Margaret married William Roper (1496-1578) and it is from the marriage of their daughter, Anne, to [Sir Philip "1st Baronet Constable of Everingham" (abt. 1595 - 1664)] (Wikipedia page) that the Constables are believed to be descended.
... Follow-up research ... from above, "marriage of their daughter, Anne, to Sir Phillip Constable" is not supported on WikiTree. Anne is not shown as a daughter of the Ropers, and Sir Phillip Constable does not show a spouse. Conclusion - This observation does not exclude the relationship possibility. More research needs to be done to either confirm or refute it. Additionally, Sir Phillip Constable is shown with two children,

  • Sir Marmaduke Constable, 2nd Bt. b. Apr 1619
  • Catherine Constable b. 1630, d. 30 Apr 1681

so connecting either one to Edith would be a start. (Lucius B. Donkle III 2021)
