Personal History
Percy Douglas "Gompy" Smith (1877-1935)
It is believed that Percy "Gompy" was of German decent. He died of a heart attack at age 58. He worked for Aetna Insurance Company and prospered. Particularly after his daughter, Eleanor's death in 1929, he and Edith "Nanny" would have their grandchildren visit, Joellen and Margot, would visit on Sunday, especially Joellen, since she was then 4 years old and Margot was still a baby.
Percy helped to fund Joe's 1st house at 8814 S. Hamilton, Chicago and didn't ask for much of the money back. Virginia (Nano's) written account may say funding came from Joe's mother, Mocco, but Joe's 1975 audio tapes clearly say the money came from Dad Smith.
In 1929 Percy bought the cottage at Indian Lake, Eau Claire, Michigan on the east side in the "Indian Lake Club" area. The purchase transaction is shown in the book keeping records for the club as "Transfer Membership" with that document attached here. It is interesting that their daughter, Eleanor, died of strep throat that same year at age 28 during what was probably her first visit to the cottage with her husband of 7 years, Joe.
After Percy's wife, Edith, followed him in death two years later in 1936 at age 60, the cottage was passed down to his two children, Stan and Eleanor('s estate). Since Eleanor had died in 1929, her share went to her young teenage children, Joellen and Margot, which was represented by her husband, and their father, Joe Murdock. The two families, the Smiths and the Murdocks, shared the cottage for a number of years but eventually Joe Murdock sold their share to the Smiths and moved to a different home on the other side of the lake.
