Personal History

Mary Virginia "Nano" (Sherwood) Murdock (1910-2005)

Both of Mary Virginia "Nano's" parents died in April at the start of the 1918 flu pandemic at the ages of 43 and 47. Their deaths were typical of that pandemic which affected young adults most severely because it is thought their immune systems are most active. They lived in Grand Forks, North Dakota when they died.

When they died, their children were young; George, 12, Mary Virginia, 8, and Josephine, 2. The older two children, George and Mary Virginia, were taken-in and raised by her mother's brother and sister in Ames, Iowa. The youngest, Josie, was taken-in and raised by her father's mother, Grandma Sherwood. The older two did not see their young sister Josie "for years."

Virginia's mother, Mary Bruster Allen Sherwood, was quite a good artist and many of her paintings were displayed at Virginia's cottage/home on Indian Lake near Dowagiac, Michigan.

Even though her parents, George Sherwood and Mary Bruster Allen, met while attending Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, Virginia was only able to attend Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa for two years starting about 1928 until the depression started and "the money gave out."

She married Joseph Kepler Murdock in 1933 after he had been widowed for four years and had two young daughters, Joellen, 7, and Margot, 4. His first wife, Elanor Barbara Smith, tragically died of strep throat in 1929 while at Indian Lake, just one year after penicillin was discovered but was not widely available yet.

Her mother's family, Mary Bruster Allen, may go back to Mayflower.
