Personal History

Mary Bruster Allen (1878-1918 flu pandemic, age 40)

Both Mary and her husband, George Sherwood died in April during the start of the 1918 flu pandemic. Their death was typical of the pandemic which affected young adults most severely because it is thought their immune systems are most active.

When they died, their children were young; George, 12, Mary Virginia, 8, and Josephine, 2. The older children were taken by Mary Allen's brother and sister in Ames, Iowa. Before moving to Ames, they had lived in North Dakota.

Josie, the youngest, was taken in by her father's mother, Grandma Sherwood. The older two did not see their young sister "for years."

Mary was quite a good artist and many of her paintings were displayed at Virginia's cottage/home on Indian Lake near Dowagiac, Michigan.

She met her husband, George Sherwood, while attending Cornell College in her home town of Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Her family may go back to Mayflower per family legend.
