Dorothy Frances (Hansbrough) Flanagan December 25, 1911 – April 6, 2011

Dorothy Frances Flanagan, 99, of Quincy, Illinois died at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Home in Quincy with family at her side.

She was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1911 on the farm north of Palmyra, Missouri, of her parents Frank and Rose (Young) Hansbrough. She married Dana Flanagan, Jr. on April 5, 1941. He died October 22, 2001.

After attending one-room schools in the Fabius Community (Franklin Grade School and Fabius High School) north of Palmyra, Dorothy was graduated from the Palmyra, Missouri High School in 1929; from Hardin Junior College, Mexico, Missouri in 1931; and from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College, Kirksville, Missouri in 1939. She began her teaching career in 1931 in the one-room, Mark School at the mouth of the Fabius River. She retired from the Canton, Missouri school system in 1977 after a total of 33 school-years as an elementary teacher. She taught schools in Lewis, Marion and Sullivan Counties in Missouri. Dorothy was a Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, was an active member of several Women's Federated Clubs, the AAUW, and the Lewis County, Missouri Retired Teachers Organization. She was always active in the Southern Baptist Churches near her; Bethel Baptist Church in the Fabius Community, The First Baptist Church of Independence, Missouri where she was married, the Lewistown Baptist Church where she raised her children, the First Baptist Church in Canton, Missouri, and the First Southern Baptist Church in Quincy, Illinois.

She is survived by her two sons; Mike (Leann) Flanagan of Quincy, Illinois and Pat (Charlotte) Flanagan of Canton, Missouri; four grandchildren, Kelly Flanagan of Boca Raton, Florida, Sean Flanagan of Imperial, Missouri, Chris (Julie) Flanagan of Canton, Missouri, Laura Flanagan of New York, New York and step-grandson, Jeffrey (Karena) Delozier of San Diego, California; and five Great-Grandchildren, Dana Marie Flanagan, Kennedy Lane Flanagan, Abigail Christy Flanagan, Ian Christopher Flanagan and Emily Marie French.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Thomas Enoch, Horace Hubert, Oren Vincent, and Frank Gilbert Hansbrough; and two sisters, Ruby Gladys Hansbrough and Leslie Elizabeth (Ellis then Skinner); and by her husband of 60 years, Dana Flanagan, Jr.

Visitation: 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 10, in the Arnold’s Funeral Home in Canton.

Services: 10:00 a.m., Monday, April 11, 2011 in the Arnold Funeral Home in Canton, Missouri. Rev. Tom Raines of the First Southern Baptist Church in Quincy, Illinois will lead the service. Burial will be in the Lewistown, Missouri Cemetery.

Memorials: Child Fund International or the donor’s choice.
