According to a letter in the research of Albert Shankland, David settled in California in 1854 and had two sons, Frank and William.

 "I have but two children, Frank and William. Frank lives in California and is married and has two children.  William lives here - married but has no children. He is a musician and does nothing but play music for a living.  Frank has a blacksmith shop in Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz County...I came to California in 1854 and followed mining in the gold mines for fifteen years.  I then moved to San Francisco for awhile and then went to Santa Cruz County and tried farming but got tired of that and went back to work at my trade as machinist.  Was chief engineer at a large paper mill in Marvin County [Marin?] Calif; for seven years until last September [1892] and quit and came up here [Snohomish, Washington]...I am getting old in years but feel as young in disposition as I did forty years ago. I don't like long faces and enjoy fun one hundred cents to the dollar. When I go to California, I will most certainly call and see you and give you a chance to see what kind of an old fool I am." {David Shankland, in letter to Elmer S.  I believe he is the David 'Shullow' in the 1860 census for Bridgeport, French Coral, Nevada Co., California. David is 30, born Ohio, carpenter; with Matilda J. 31 born Kentucky; Frank V. L. 8 b. Indiana; and Ella J. (?) 2 born California. {p. 442}
 In the 1870 census for Meadow Lake township, Truckee post office, Nevada Co., California, David Shankland is 40, a carpenter from Indiana.  His wife Matilda is 40, born Kentucky, and their sons are Frank, 19; and William, 4. On the next line, with no new dwelling place number are Hattie G. Schneider, age 6, born Missouri; and Jennie B. Schneider, 3, born California; and Harriet (Champeney?), age 60 from Massachusetts. {p.263}
 In the 1880 census for Pajaro, Santa Cruz Co., California, David Shankland is a farmer, age 49 from Ohio, parents born Kentucky.  His wife 'Mabeda J'. is 52, born Kentucky, parents Kentucky. [It is possible that their ages are transposed, or that she is a second wife.]  Their son William is 14, born California (father Ohio, mother Kentucky).  {p.526b, NARA T9-0082}  His son Frank is also living in Pajaro.
 In the 1900 census for Snohomish, Washington, David Shankland is 71, born Aug 1829 in Ohio (father Kentucky, mother Indiana), married 50 years, 'bicycle repair shop'.  His wife Matilda is 73, born May 1827 in Kentucky (father Kentucky, mother Virginia), with 2 of 3 children living. Boarders are Nora Morgan 27 PA; Edith Carney 18 NE; and George Wood 36 Ohio. {ed 220, sh 14b, p. 251}
