 He is probably in the 1880 census in Pajaro, Santa Cruz Co., California as Frank Shankland, lumberman age 28 from Indiana (parents Indiana) living with wife Matilda, age 18, born California (parents England). {p.533c, NARA T9-0082}His father is also living in Pajaro.
 In a letter dated 1 March 1895, to his cousin Elmer S. Shankland, David writes "I have but two children, Frank and William.  Frank lives in California and is married and has two children.  William lives here - married but has no children.  He is a musician and does nothing but play music for a living.  Frank has a blacksmith shop in Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz County... I came to California in 1854 and followed mining in the gold mines for fifteen years.  I then moved to San Francisco for awhile and then went to Santa Cruz County and tried farming but got tired of that and went back to work at my trade as machinist." 
 There is a notice from the Watsonville Pajaronian, 1 Jan 1880: "Married. Hopkins-Shankland -- Santa Cruz, December 26th, by Rev. J. L. Trefen, Miss Tillie Hopkins to Frank Shankland, both of Watsonville."
  In the 1880 census in Pajaro, Santa Cruz Co., California,  Frank Shankland, is a lumberman age 28 from Indiana (parents Indiana) living with wife Matilda, age 18, born California (parents England). {p.533c, NARA T9-0082}His father is also living in Pajaro.
 In the 1900 census for Snohomish Co., Washington, Frank Shankland is 48, born Aug 1851 in Indiana (father Ohio, mother Kentucky), married 20 years, 'bicycle shop'; with wife Tillie 37, born Nov 1862 in California (parents England), with 2 of 2 children living. The children are Ethel 19, born Sept 1880 in California; and Leon 16, born Jan 1884 in Washington. {ed 220, sh 7b, p. 244}
 In the 1910 census for St. Johns, ward 2, precinct 91, Multomah Co., Oregon, Frank Shankland is 59 born Indiana (father Ohio, mother Kentucky), divorced, 'machinist, repair shop'; with brother William H. 40 born California (father OH, mother KY), married once, 'musician, theater'; and mother Matilda F. 82 born Kentucky (father Kentucky, mother Virginia) with 2 of 4 children living. {ed 112 sh (10?) a, p. 103}
  A note by A. B. Shankland adds "The son Frank...came to Portland to live in about 1906, after the death of his wife... His son and daughter were nearly grown at that time and the son, Lee, married and moved to a dairy ranch near Ridgefield, Washington, where he lived until his death in 1938.
