In a letter dated 1 March 1895, to his cousin Elmer S. Shankland, David Shankland writes "I have but two children, Frank and William. Frank lives in California and is married and has two children. William lives here - married but has no children. He is a musician and does nothing but play music for a living. Frank has a blacksmith shop in Boulder Creek, Santa Cruz County... I came to California in 1854 and followed mining in the gold mines for fifteen years. I then moved to San Francisco for awhile and then went to Santa Cruz County and tried farming but got tired of that and went back to work at my trade as machinist." {Shankland Family Research by Albert Shankland}
