In the 1850 census for Steuben township, Warren Co., Indiana, 'Tendall Shamblin' is a farmer, age 25 from Ohio, with $800. His wife Amanda is 25, born Indiana and their son Benjamin L., is 1. [Cousin?] Henry Crawford, age 26 from Indiana, also lives there. {p.22a} In the 1860 census for Milford, Prairie Green, Iroquois Co., Illinois, Kendall 'S' Shankland is 35, born Ohio. His wife 'Miranda' is 33, born Indiana. Their children are Benjamin, 11; and George M., 7 -- born Indiana -- and Sarah F., 7; and David, 1; born Illinois. {p. 244} In the 1870 census for Prairie Green, Iroquois Co., Illinois, Kendal Shankland is a farmer 45 from Ohio, with wife Amanda 43 Indiana; and children Benjamin F. 21 and George W. 17 -- born Indiana; and Florence, David, and Laura born Illinois. Oscar Lewis and Samuel 'Shank', age 21 from Indiana, are farm laborers. {p. 6, dwelling #43, family #42 -- next door to cousin Johnson Shankland} In the 1880 census for Prairie Green, Iroquois Co., Illinois, Ken Shankland is a farmer, age 55 from Ohio (parents Kentucky). His wife Amanada is 53, born Indiana (parents Kentucky). Daughter Laura is 10, born Illinois; and Edwin Shankland, 'other' is 19, born Indiana, parents Kentucky. {NARA T9-021, p.345c} "Kendal Shankland, deceased, an honored early settler of Iroquois County, was a native of the Buckeye State. He was born in Eaton, Ohio, on the 1st of July, 1825, his parents being David and Sarah (Crawford) Shankland. Both were natives of Kentucky, and were of Virginian stock. In 1829, they settled near what is now West Lebanon, Ind... He was reared to agricultural pursuits. On the 14th of February, 1848, Mr. Shankland was married in Boone County, Ind., to Miss Amanda Harris, a native of Marion County, Ind., born in 1827, and a daughter of Benjamin and Mahala Harris. Mr. Shankland continued to reside in Warren County, Ind., until 1854, when he removed to Illinois, and settled in what is now the township of Prairie Green, Iroquois County. There he invested his capital, amounting to $1000, in land, and engaged in farming. In course of time he added by purchase to the original tract, until at his death he was the owner of one thousand acres of valuable land, having become quite wealthy. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Shankland, as follows: Benjamin F., the eldest, wedded Miss Nancy R. Miskimen, and is and the President of the Watseka Republican Company, and the editor of the paper; George W., the next younger, married Miss Susan Seager, and is a farmer residing on the old homestead; Florence is the wife of George L. Miller, and is engaged in agricultural pursuits in McPherson County, Kan.; David wedded Miss Mary Cox, and is a farmer residing near Fowler, Ind.; Laura is the wife of C. B. Smalley, of Benton County, Ind... His death occurred at his home August 12, 1882. His wife survives him, and has since married Mr. Gill. Fitting.} "Watseka Republican, Aug 25, 1882. Kendall Shankland died at his home in Prairie Green on Saturday evening, August 12, 1882, aged 57 years, 2 months and 11 days. He was born in Preble County, Ohio, July 1, 1825, and with his parents removed to Indiana in the year 1829. He was married there and with his wife came to Prairie Green township, Iroquois county, six miles northeast of Hoopeston, in 1853, where he has lived every since, making a home and rearing an interesting family...A few years ago he went to California in search of health and was seemingly benefited. He again grew worse, and last winter he went to Waukesha, Wis. where he remained some time. He returned in the spring, but at the approach of warm weather he went back again and remained until last Friday morning, when he was brought home to die.
