Former state Sen. Bishop Kilpatrick dies

Former state Sen. Bishop Kilpatrick, 75, of Geneva-on-the-Lake and formerly of Warren, died of a heart attack Saturday in Valparaiso, Fla.
Kilpatrick served in the 1960s as Democratic state senator for the 32nd district. He previously served for 24 years in the Ohio House and held several influential positions, including speaker pro temp and majority floor leader.
He was first elected to the House in 1935, following in the footsteps of his late father, W.B. Kilpatrick, a former four-time mayor of Warren who served four years in the House. His brother, W.B. Kilpatrick Jr., was a former Trumbull County commissioner.
A Warren native and graduate of Harding High School, he was a member of Central Christian Church; OX-5, a pioneer aviation group; Silver Wings; Sons of the American Revolution; and Elks Club. He lived with his wife, the former Dorla Trask, at 195 Oak Knoll St., N.E.
He was a tax consultant by profession. Following his career in elective politics, which included a run for Congress, he was tapped to serve as special consultant to the Ohio Lakelands Department, in the Bureau of Public Works.
As state Senator, Kilpatrick was elected to the board of directors of a seven-state air pollution facts-finding commission, representing Ohio on the board.
Memorial services for Kilpatrick will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the McLaughlin Twin City Funeral Home. Cremation will be held, with graveside services planned later at Crown Hill Burial Park, Vienna.
The family asks that material tributes take the form of contributions to the Heart Fund.
A member of the Air Force Reserves, Kilpatrick had taught World War II pilots at Purdue and Kent State universities. He owned two planes, one of which is in the Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich.
He was a self-employed tax consultant and also worked for the IRS.
Besides his wife, whom he married Dec. 10, 1944, he leaves two stepsons, Norval Taylor of Valparaiso, Richard Taylor of Fairborn, Ohio; a sister, Mrs. Grace Crider of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a brother, W.B. Kilpatrick Jr. of Warren; and three grandchildren.
