Bessie sailed for America on April 9, 1875 with her father, mother, two sisters and three brothers. They sailed on the good ship St. Holland of the National Line, which was propelled by both steam and sail, taking 15 days to make the trip. Bessie was a midwife in the area and assisted with homecare for the new mothers. She helped in the home delivery of many children in the community. She also worked picking grapes and worked in the Gaylords and Keymels dryhouse processing cherries and apples. Per the 1920 US Census, she lived as a widow on Eaton Rd, with daughters Lillian, May (Ida May) and Ruby. In 1930 she was widowed and lived with her sister-in-law, Emma Woodhams Harris and May Eaton.
