Bertha Gaalswyk, 93, Rock Valley, died Thursday, August 18, 1988 at Valley Manor Nursing Home.

Bertha Verdoorn was born February 18, 1895 in Sioux County near Rock Valley and attended school near there. She married Aric Gaalswyk December 12, 1913 in Canada. The couple moved into Rock Valley in 1915 and to a farm near town in 1919. They retired in 1952 and moved back into Rock Valley. Her husband died April 18,1980.

She became a resident of the nursing home in October 1983. She was a member of the First Reformed Church.

Survivors include three sons: Joe and Alvin, both of Rock Valley; and Tom of Alvord, Iowa; two daughters: Mary Huyser, Inwood, Iowa; and Mrs. Elmer (Elsie) Kooima, Rock Valley; 20 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 20 in the First Reformed Church. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation was held at the Porter Funeral Home.
