Bernard was born in County Antrim, Ireland, about 1834, and immigrated to the US when he was 4 years old in 1838, with his parents and 2 younger siblings. He grew up in the town of Greenwood, and later lived in the nearby town of West Union, both in Steuben County in southwest New York. Bernard married late, at nearly 30, but then had 7 boys over the next 20 years. In the 1875 and 1880 censuses, he is listed as a farmer in Greenwood. By the 1900 census, he is listed as a grocer and owning his own home (not a farm) in West Union, living with his youngest son Francis. He lived to be about 88, outliving his wife (who was 10 years his junior) by over 20 years.
