Barney and Mary met in Steuben County, New York and married when she was 19 and he nearly 30. Both were born in Ireland and had immigrated with their families. They had 7 sons between 1867 and 1883. The family lived on a farm in Greenwood, Steuben County, in southwestern New York (in 1875 and 1880 censuses). We don't know when Mary died. The 1900 census had just Barney and son Francis (though Barney listed as "M" rather than "W" for marital status), the 1905 census had Barney with Mary, and then Barney was alone in 1910 and 1920 (but listed as "M"). Their children were:
