Transcribed and annotated by C. Leon Harris

    Virginia Augusta County to wit.
Bartholomew Ragan this 12 day of March 1818, appeared before me John th Brown Judge of the Superior Court of Chancery holden in Staunton, in the said County of Augusta, and made oath on the Holy Evangelists that on the 7th of March in the year 1777 he enlisted with John McGuire, whose company was afterwards commanded by Cap. Thomas Bell of the 16th Virg’a. Regiment, on Continental establishment, then commanded by Col. [William] Grayson, for the term of three years. That he was wounded at the taking of Stoney point [sic: Stony Point NY] on the 16th July 1778 [sic: 1779], but continued in the service till the end of his term; when he was honorably discharged. That he afterwards, in the year 1780, enlisted, for eighteen months, with the said Cap. Bell, in the (he believes) 8th Reg’t. commanded by Col. Haws [sic: Samuel Hawes]; was marched to Hillsborough in North Carolina, and was severely wounded at the battle of Hobkirk’s hill near Cambden, on the 25th or 26th of April 1781 [sic: near Camden SC, 25 Apr]. He farther states he still remained in the service, notwithstanding his wounds, till the expiration of his time, and was again honorably discharged. Both of his discharges are now worn out, or so defaced as not to be intelligible. He farther swears, that having still a good constitution, & being able, notwithstanding his wounds (the effects of which he still feels) to support himself by his labor; he never applied for a pension, & never has had one. That he returned to the afores’d. County of Augusta (where he as ever since resided) and married. That his wife is now dead; and all his children have left him, & removed to distant parts of the Country. He is now very old (being about eighty years of age) is poor, having nothing but his own labour to depend on for subsistence – and that he is really in want of the assistance of his Country for support.
