George and Julia and their 11 siblings were the children of Azel Hovey and Lucy Rockwell, who settled in Berkshire, Tioga County, and then lived in Maine (Union) just over the hill in Broome County, and finally about 1825 moved to Newark in Tioga County where Azel died in 1838. Azel is buried in Newark Valley, Lucy went west with her children and is buried in Belvidere, Illinois (she died February 29, 1860).

Probably born in Lebanon, Connecticut. A document in the Tioga County Historical Society reports his birth occuring on November 5, 1764 [The Hovey Book] in Lebanon, Windham County, Connecticut, but I've not been able to find the source of this date so I'm hesitant to use it.

The Hovey Book states that Azel and Lucy settled in Tioga County, New York, and removed from there to Maine, New York, in 1809, and in 1825 to Newark, Tioga County, where he died.
