Azel (sometimes called "Nathan") Hovey married Jemima Phelps on November 11, 1762 in Connecticut. The Hovey book reports that they were the parents of one son, Azel, but the Historical Gazetter and Directory of Tioga County, New York (published in 1887) reports that they were the parents of eleven children. They could only identify Azel, Abigail, Jemima, Eunice, Jedediah, Abel, Nathan, Zeruiah, and David.

According to a letter found in Illinois Genealogical records, 1938-1939 (Vol. II), Nathan (Azel) Hovey was a soldier at Valley Forge. According to the DAR Application of Mrs. Linnie (Brown) Tripp (DAR ID #162660), Nathan Hovey served as a private in Captain Parker's company, 2nd regiment, Connecticut Line.

  3. I see no imperative evidence that "Nathan" (per birth record) was known as "Azel". No tombstone photo on FindAGrave, and the mentioned Bible is not quoted. All other claims appear to be from other researchers, The Hovey Book, and other unquoted sources.
