From Hovey web page at http://www.michaelrmurphy.com/Hovey.htm:

It is unclear what killed Azel Hovey, Jr., but it is possibly explained by a letter he wrote to H. H. Phelps about one month before his death. On June 17, 1826 (from Rochester) Azel Hovey Jr. wrote to Phelps "concerning an injury to the calf of his leg. He had commenced work for Colonel Riley on a scow. Nearly died of blood poisoning." (DAR Illinois GRC page 220) What is clear is that he was ill and knew his death was approaching since he prepared a will. This will is found on page 209 of the Illinois Genealogical Records, 1938-1939, Vol. II: "Will of Azel Hovey Jr., Town of Brighton, County of Monroe. Give and bequeath unto Herman H. Phelps my notes due. To Christina Brunson of Syracuse fifty dollars. To parents, of the town of Newark County of Tioga, all personal effects and property after above named expenses have been deducted ... the said Herman H. Phelps to attend to all these matters. Wittness Jeremiah Hildreth, Samantha Noble, Tirza Dunham". Elsewhere in these Illinois GRC documents (page 219) the following is found: "Rochester, July 13, 1826. Josiah Maush writes Azel Hovey recommending Mr. Phelps, the bearer of the letter, who aided and cared for Azel Jr. in his last sickness. He also mentioned Dr. Smith who attended him as a man of 'skill and able council.'"
