AUGUST MANTHEI, at six years of age, emigrated to the United States with his family, arriving in Boston, Massachusetts July 31, 1891. He lived with his parents on the family farm in "Garden Valley" near Alma Center, Wisconsin, and operated it himself after their deaths until his retirement late in life. He never married.
