Person:Anthony Houston (1)

Anthony Houston is believed to have been the son of William Houston and Agnes Stewart of Whithorn, Wigtonshire, listed there in the 1684 census roll, along with several brothers and sisters. ^[1]

One of those brothers seems to be a William Houston whose presence in the family is indicated by the phrase "and yor." after "William Houston, elder". (The "and yor." seems to be a misprint for an abbreviation for "and younger".) This William Houston seems to correspond to the person:William Houston (14) of new Castle Delaware; that William Houston left a will in 1707 that identifies his "dearest and only brother" Anthony of London, furrier, to whom he apparently bequethed property adjacent to the New Castle Commons; he same will indicates that this William was previously a burgess of Whithorn, and later of Glasgow, Scotland. Delaware land records later show Williams New castle property as being disposed of by Jonathan Houston, son of Anthony, and involved a Henderson Houston, Jonathan's elder brother. These details tie into christening records for several Churches in London, wherein births of several children for Anthony and Jane Houston are recorded about 1695-1705, including a Henderson Houston born 1695. These interlocking wills, land transactions, birth records and census rolls, serve to link both William of New castle, and Anthony of London, to Whithorn, Wigtonshire, Scotland. The given name "Henderson", by itself, seems rare enough to make it clear that the birth records for Anthony and Jane's children, are indeed for the nephews of William Houston of New Castle.

It is not clear that Anthony the furrier ever came to New Castle. Later transactions indicate that the New Castle property eventually came into the hands of an Anthony Houston, but this may have been Anthony son of Anthony the furrier. Other records, such as a note that shows that Anthony Houston of New Castle attended the celebration of the King's Birthday in New Castle, in 1724, may refer to the younger Anthony, rather than to Williams brother.
