Alfred James Savage was born on 13th August 1875 at Marylebone, in the inner western suburbs of London. He was the son of Mary Ann Savage, formerly Snelling, and her husband Walter William Savage, a last maker. By 1877, when Alfred was baptised, the family was living on Carnaby Street in the West End of London.
Alfred's father died in 1883, when Alfred was only seven years old. The family then moved to Islington in the northern suburbs of London. The 1891 census finds Alfred living with his mother and siblings at 18 Landseer Road in Islington. Alfred's mother was working as a laundress, whilst Alfred had found work as a piano finisher. He would spend the rest of his working life in piano manufacturing.
In 1895, aged 20, Alfred married Edith Abbott in the St Pancras area of London. They went on to have four children between 1896 and 1904, all born in Islington. The 1901 census finds them living at 12 Kingsdown Road in Islington, whilst in 1911 they were living at 66 Chalk Farm Road in St Pancras. Alfred's brother Charles and his family were living with them at that time.
By 1932 Alfred and Edith had moved to Dartford in Kent. Two of Alfred's siblings, Lily and Walter, had earlier also moved to Dartford. Edith died there in 1932, aged 55.
In 1934, a couple of years after Edith's death, Alfred remarried. His second wife was Harriet Childs, formerly Abbott, who was Edith's older sister. Harriet's first husband had also died in 1932. They married in Islington, and then went to live at Enfield in Middlesex. At the outbreak of the Second World War Alfred and Harriet were living with her daughter's family at 60 Pembroke Avenue in Enfield.
Harriet died in 1948, aged 75. Alfred survived her by about fourteen years, in which time he moved back to the Dartford area. He died in 1962, aged 86.
